There's a larger feminist discourse to be had--and I'm sure has been had--on the Entwives being shunned for inventing agriculture and wanting a nice garden while the Ents just go aimlessly wandering through the wilds. But if I start that, I'm never going to finish Chapter 4, so we're moving on.

According to Treebeard, the when the Ents discovered the gardens the Entwives had made and found out they had taught humans how to farm the Ents became disgusted and left them, preferring to roam. Later, the Ents returned to find the Entwives gone, their gardens in ruins.

I've never read it as shunning. I think of it as a story about how you can lose something (speaking of major themes of the book...) because you don't realize it's something you could lose, so you don't try to hold onto it until it's too late.
