Why do you not see that only those privileged to have holidays off will benefit? And frankly, those people can usually manage it without a whole day off. If you want more suffeage, extend it over three days, Sunday through Tuesday, and suspend all speculative reporting until afterwards.
Ok, forget the 3 days and 1st Amdmt suspension is that can't fly, but you have to work with the fact there is no single day everyone can use. Also, most of the working poor don't do mail-in. That's a barrier, whether or not you can see it.
How will that help the service workers who have to work while professionals get the day off? This may help people privileged enough to be too lazy to vote but it doesn't help the people we most want to encourage.
People should not be required to give up one of their few precious days off to get another day off to be able vote. How about we stop giving away things for working class people even it is just a hypothetical.
Who do we need to bribe with campaign contributions to make that happen?
With bipartisan support for years they've yet to undo daytime savings time. If nobody bribes them they just don't take action.
Do what we do in Australia:
1. Elections are on Saturdays
2. Enrolling to vote at 18 is compulsory
3. Voting at an election is compulsory (minimal fine)
4. Preferential voting for House
5. Proportional voting for Senate
Result: High attendance, informed public, extreme views don't get the votes.
Honestly, the folks that would actually get the day off are the same people that don't suffer retribution for using the lawful time off to go vote on election day already. It should just be mandatory that all employers schedule voting time on election day.
I always wondered if MLK Jr would have preferred that over his birthday. Pres Day is an even better suggestion - Washington and Lincoln were only 2 out of a growing #, makes less sense as time passes.
I prefer Veterans Day. Don’t nix it, just move elections to that day. It’s already in November and if you believe these people served to protect our rights, freedoms and Democracy than we should honor them by VOTING.
Or just have four weeks of voting, you can vote anywhere and get the full ballot, or vote online, see your vote online, and change your vote online up until the last second.

Personally, Monday's holiday meant working harder and for more hours than I would have on a regular weekday.

It makes life easier, and prevents people from being blocked from taking part in the democracy that y'all are supposed to have!
(In Europe, we're far more flexible. I vote by post.)
Few days are as important as election day.
