The art was commissioned. This was a regular assignment with DAW Books.

My first cover came after sending slides to Donald Wollheim. He wrote an encouraging letter that led me to NY and my first cover. More background on that in the bio on the website:

bit of a tangent, but I am curious how involved you have been with licensing your art for album covers, especially the band Cirith Ungol. They are pretty clearly fans of Elric (and you!). Is their music something you enjoy?

Yes, Michael is involved in licensing decisions with Audrey handling the details. Years ago he had an agent who handled int'l rights but that's all in-house now.

They've had a decades long relationship with Rob and the band. I met Rob at the BSF retrospective in Riverside.

Well, I most enjoy seeing them live, where my diaphragm can get a workout owing to their heavy pulsing rhythms.

Lately I haven’t been listening to much metal stuff but I’m sure that’s about to change. There’s something about the summer that steers me either towards reggae or heavy metal. 1/2

This painting was pure fun. I had always wanted to do a boogeyman, and had submitted the idea to DAW Books years earlier for a previous cover. It wasn't chosen, but I kept the sketch and resubmitted it with other concepts every year after that, until it was finally chosen for this anthology. 2/3

Someday I'll paint the boogeyman I imagined when I was young, which I still remember. As funny as it sounds, he was shaped like a big turkey drumstick!
