Has there been any attempt to model the impact on land values? I'd have thought that reducing the usefulness of farmland as a tax haven would cool land prices, which in turn would bring the value of agricultural estates down. But perhaps that's naive? I'm no economist.

Paul, I don't understand why farms aren't run as Ltd businesses, which would not pay IHT. Only farms run as sole traders, partnerships or co-ops would pay IHT. Easy to solve surely.

Targeting domestic food producers in the face of the damage wrought by Brexit seems entirely wrong headed to me. Small farmers are also custodians of our countryside. We should be supporting UK food production, not undermining it.

'Custodians of the countryside' is a tag line promoted by NFU presidents since the 1970s. Since then we have lost half of farmland bird population.

Agree and just like the ULEZ expansion, when it was actually brought in the vast majority found they were unaffected and moved on

As for "custodians"
I live in a farming area & that concept is very wide of the mark
Sadly many of them basically fly tip in the fields. Rubbish & rotting equipment left everywhere
