My thought entirely when I heard their cacophony on Monday! Data on tractor fuel consumption is difficult to find but over £10/hour or 11mpg are widely cited. Red diesel effective tax rate is 11p/litre, a massive discount!

Some of these Farmers seem ill advised on Red Diesel rules and finance. Perhaps you could do a podcast for them on allowable use of Red Diesel and inheritance tax planning. IHT calculations, Handing over assets 7 years before death, use of Ltd companies etc. They may realise things are not so bad.

The ‘events’ exemption was phased out two years ago. It’s illegal to use red diesel for any purpose that isn’t directly agricultural.

I’ve always thought they could ‘tax plan’. They can put the land in a trust, split the business into different limited companies (plant/dairy/livestock etc). Gifting farm .. or don’t the owners trust their children?
