About 12 years ago My sister and I set up her old laptop to play movies on the TV. The laptop's fan was busted so we did basically this, having an external fan blow air directly onto the cooling fins.

The other day I was unzipping a large file from a slightly dubious source, when my laptop started heating up to a pretty concerning degree.
