A sequel to that:
American company decides to make shirts in the US.
American company has to pay US wages.
Staff work for slave wages in order to allow company to sell at $45
Shirts end up being poorly made with low quality materials.
American company can't compete with better shirts sold abroad.
The sequel is more like:
American company decides to make shirts in the US.
American company has to pay US wages.
Staff work for US wages which only allows company to sell at $60
1/
Shirts are also being poorly made with low quality materials to keep prices as low as possible but still too high!
American company can't compete and has to buy tariffed shirts and sell at 50$! 2/
The consumer has always had the option to buy American. This tax just puts the thumb on the scale of the competitively priced foreign product. The inevitable result is higher prices.
America does not have the industry to support its needs.
This will hurt the Walmart shopper the most!
What it will do is put Trump as the head of the negotiating table, with his citizens as hostages.
Canada's biggest imports are energy (gas, oil & power) along with copper and aluminum. America does not have the resources in January to replace it. That alone will be a $122 annual billion bill payable by the US citizens.
If Canada is smart, they'll just throw the switch on the energy
There is an assumption that Americans can make shirts just as cheaply as these overseas sweat shops.
Considering they are planning to use the military to round up the same people who would be working in said shops in the US, I'm going to speculate that Americans are just going to get ripped off.
This is terrible. People have no idea how many goods are exported to the USA, from Canada. They are our largest trading partner. I hope the Feds will negotiate something better, as they did with the steel, last time he was in office.
OH, it's going to get much worse. When he tariffs Canada that will affect everything manufactured in the US. If he tariffs energy, then the cost to heat your home and keep the lights on just doubled.
And if Canada is smart they'll just add an equal exit tariff on everything payable by Americans
Exactly. Americans will end up paying more for everything. But those that voted him in won't understand the impact it will have on their economy. I wonder who whispered in Trump's ear to implement these tariffs.
With Trump vowing to deport all illegal immigrants, US agriculture & factories will be decimated so will not be able to produce cheaper goods or even similarly priced.
More because they don't know what the retaliation is going to be.
Frankly, some countries just have to step up and say enough is enough.
If Canada just says OK no more steel, aluminum, copper can be shipped to the US, their entire manufacturing economy would collapse in months.
