That's not pettiness, just a respect for history, something the Americans don't have much of. According to my ex-pat nephew, they literally think THEY won the war of 1812!!!
We do hold grudges well. I still haven't gotten over the Canuck's loss of the Stanley Cup in 1994 when the New York Rangers stole it from us in game 7..!!!

Not to mention them refusing to allow Covid vaccines and PPE to be exported to Canada towards the beginning of the pandemic. They only loosened that when they were stuck with expiring vaccine because many Americans refused to be vaccinated.
