Many MD/PhD students applied F31-D b/c it actually funds part of med school (standard F31 can't, for whatever reason). There is also an F30 mechanism for MD/PhD students but institutions like NHGRI don't even participate in them! So to get funding for MD+PhD, the ONLY choice was the F31-D.
