I think there’s something to the idea that there was a liberal hegemony in this country from the 50s until recently, a la Lionel Trilling, because I still find it shocking to hear people speak openly about the evils of diversity.

This is beyond stupid, I cannot even. The US' superpower for the past few decades was immigration, creating wealth at no cost. Germany is actually better of with immigration than it would have been without. And, speaking as a German, most of the issues are due to denying the fact of immigration.
