The last 18 months has been a masterclass in moral luck. So many people identify with the left because of where they grew up or who their friend group is, not because of any ideological commitments. People who claim to be left-wing progressives actively running PR for genocide.

One reason why Trumpism has succeeded is that the right has come to recognize that the putative commitments many people have to liberalism are actually extremely thin and fake and, as far as elites are concerned, actually deployed instrumentally against constituencies the right also hates.
