So much of th original trilogy hinges on how much they nailed the cast of heroes, and their chemistry together. For all its nostalgia-chasing faults, TFA completely nailed that part of the assignment.

At first watch I didn’t disliked it, however, after some time, I noticed how similar with a New Hope it was. The actors deserve praise for their performance, but the script was, imo, very weak. I’m team prequels 😅 ROTS is if not the best, among the best of all movies. Oh, and Rogue One is also great

TFA is superficially fine (the JJ special) but it so thoroughly undermines the OT story and the sequels ability to push into new territory that it's the least forgivable of the sequels for me.

Interesting. I'm unsure how TFA undermines the OT story. Is it because the New Republic had zero years of prosperity and/or Luke had no active Jedi academy?
Last Jedi definitely has some doors to close but I think TFA is surprisingly open

The victory of the OT is undone in the opening crawl so the Empire/Rebel dynamic can be the same. All pieces return to starting positions, more or less. For me it's less about whether it's plausible and more about how uninterested they were in exploring anything new.

TFA is basically just ANH’s story repeated again 30 years later. Same character roles, same plot points. A couple differences and remixes but otherwise the exact same.

i was so worried when i first watched tfa for the first time since the 2010's couple of weeks ago because it had felt like the most personally meaningful star war since rotj. turns out canto bight still seems redundant but the core message was still so strong it made me cry like it did in 2017

Gonna have to disagree. First Star Wars movie I've ever fallen asleep during,and the first time I ever fell asleep in a theater.

Sorry, but to this old school Star Wars fan the prequels are almost Oscar worthy against the sequels.

I really like TFA, it’s a fun watch. But I wish it wasn’t set up by the rebellion from the OT actually being a bunch of failures.

Force awakens was a gigantic apology for the prequels. The trailer especially went to pains to show you things were done practically, not with dodgy CGI.

Force Awakens was trying to reboot star wars when the lasting memory of it in the public consciousness was "George Lucas ruined my childhood".

The force awakens slammed the nostalgia button in a way that didn't feel like they were scared of the fandom. Something that has not been seen in the fandom since.

I watched the force awakens 7 times in the theater (technically 6 and one drive-in). It's retreads the OT but it was fun damn it! It made me want more Star Wars so it did exactly what it needed to do. The failure war RoS which retroactively made TFA and TLJ worse (I ❤️ TLJ to be clear)
