It sounds like it was a format over-embraced for testing and now completely overtaken by AI

This makes sense. I remember that for AP Lang it was a “hack” to write the intro paragraph twice if you were crunched for time and you would get a decent score. It’s a good basic structure to start with but probably not the worst if students have to develop a more unique voice to stand out from AI.

What was a hack evolved into handcuffs as kids came to us less skilled with worse habits. It became a way to make it look like they could craft a text without actually having to make decisions or mistakes, which is how you develop.

So basically, it improved the writing but not the writer.
