One ethic for making challenging work (movies, music, paintings, etc) I've been thinking about goes something like

Audience: Oh shit, I gotta figure out this?
Artist: Ya
Audience: And if I don't want to?
Artist: Then I have bad news for your experience of the rest of the world beyond this artwork
