Based on your spelling, I'm going to assume you're from the UK and that this conversation is based on a cultural misunderstanding. I know my partner, who's British, did not receive any education about Canadian politics in school outside of how it affected Britain; things may still be the same.

Yep. My undergrad degree is actually romance languages haha but criminalizing language is part of the violence colonizers unleashed so I am always aware that someone might justifiably hate languages i love.
