I dissociate a little and step in if they’re about to make Mercury weep. I work in IT. It’s refreshing to see learning happen sometimes. The pickle is the seeming lack of retention.
It took me a while, and looking back, I’m thinking the people I corrected who were gracious about it and thanked me were probably autistic. Most people aren’t like that.
I try (honestly, I do!) to restrain myself from offering corrections unless asked, or if someone would be in immediate danger.
I’m 54yo and only just found out 2 months ago that I’m autistic so I have really struggled with not correcting people my entire life but at least I know now why I’m like that
I didn't learn that I was doing this until I was about 25. 🤦🏻♀️ I still have to battle the urge a decade later. Sometimes, you just got to let people figure it out. And that's so hard!
I now recognize that my discomfort comes from hostile policing of my behaviour in childhood, and the mortification and shame that was placed on me, but it remains a challenge to actually find ways to deal with this constructively.
👍 I encourage everyone to hold each other accountable. Nothing is more important than truth, it defines us all. I think mistakes, even small ones, do more damage than people realize. Culturally, humanity must learn to appreciate the process of self-correction. Ego and inexperience make it difficult.
Aren't you currently trying to correct me to get closer to your version of humanity? I think it's a good thing, it's how we hold each other accountable. The question is, what is correct human behavior?
I agree that "keep taking the abuse" is not the right answer, but that's how my parents think.

Thus, the masking. It's the only way to survive in this world.
Especially when it's in service of the traditional stiff upper lip approach.

I am not part of the 'we' that thinks it has a duty to do that.
It's a very traditional model.
Be loud and unapologetic in calling out falsehoods.
We're facing a movement that wants to exterminate us. We can't afford to pull our punches.
