One rule I adhere to is whether it passes the test of elegance in my own ear - except that I hate saying "my own" when it's my ear I'm talking about.

Is "my own" about ownership - and/or permanence - or just emphasis?

"My own ear" likely is always mine.

"My own friend" sounds wrong as friends are shared not owned.

"My own car" sounds wrong... because I'm likely to sell it?

"It's my own fault." I accept ownership of the blame, and permanently.

I am with you. I think it's also important that it doesn't catch in someone else's ear. You don't want someone to be fixating on how you said something rather than what you said.

Whenever I hear someone not end a sentence with a preposition it sounds forced. Indeed usually it sounds like the person is doing some internal mental gymnastics to get it right.

I’m good with the “none is always singularly” except when I have 0 bananas. Zero is always plural.

Oh and in computing it’s usually “less than” for both signed (not a quantity) and unsigned (can be a quantity). Then again, sometimes it’s “lower”. Endless fun there.

The only one I'll *sort of* defend is less/fewer. We share the trait of having two different words here with the Scandi languages, so linguistically we're viewing them as distinct, albeit similar, concepts. And yes, language evolves and I never correct anyone on it, but they're not really the same
