Pointing out the incorrect spelling of a ridiculously over-complex word in a post about crazy language rules. Ironically, I think only the Germans have a word for that.
The full rule that I was taught is 'I before e except after c but only when there is an 'ee' sound in the word. Even then there are exceptions to this. Such as seize. Go figure.🤔
This is not as simple as those who have commented believe.
The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis springs to mind as being relevant, as does authoritarian régimes banning minority languages such as Kurdish (in both Turkey and Iran and probably Assad’s Syria)
Sapir Whorf makes a lot of sense. Arguably that is the basis of the suppression of languages. "You speak differently to us therefore you must think differently, so we need to make you speak like us in order to make you think like us". History is full of examples.
And, of course, for every Rule, there are exceptions. I watched The Cider House Rules for the first time in many, many years, last night. I must be getting soppy as I grow older. It really hit home, emotionally. Might be all the Christmas ads, too, I suppose? Even Atheists suffer Christmas Blues!
