Not so long before James Caan passed away I watched Rollerball, expecting silly violent fare somewhere between Logan's Run & Death Race 2000. Instead it was sedate, thoughtful, and quite enthralling. And then I learned Jewison directed it! Blew me away. That was a good night.
Incredible and a real testament to not needing everyone to be from the culture you want to portray. Shanley is Irish, Jewison as wasp as they come, but even amongst the cast Olympia Dukakis, Feodor Chaliapin and of course Cher herself were not Italian at all. And yet, it’s so right on.
