The DeepSeek app offers me, for free, the same services I pay OpenAI a monthly fee for — services that OpenAI loses billions of dollars a year providing.
This is witchcraft.
This is witchcraft.

When the product is free, you are the product.
Proceed with caution.
It is still a beast of a model and needs a ton of memory and cpu cores which someone is going to have to pay for.
It’s like letting the Vampire in.
This is classic market capture. They learned that from the social media companies.
You can't :)
It's open source, you're just using the version that actively costs them money, so they of course sell your data.
If you run offline, they cannot receive your data, and you can even change what data trains it. I support anger toward the app, tho
It's like if Blender did an in-browser version that sold your data to pay the server cost. Why are you using the in-browser version if you don't want your data sold? Just download it and run it offline.
You sure about that?
Some reporting suggests that the R1 is pushing CCP agenda in chats. Try talking about Taiwan, Uighurs, Tienanmen Square and other topics CCP considers sensitive.
Also, models are one thing; mobile apps built on top of them are a completely different set of potential security issues.
If you chose to run it online via their servers then obviously they have to pay the electricity bill somehow lol
Don't spread fear misinformation simply because it's Chinese. OpenAI also has censorship, provided by the state, and is not open source.
Open source does not make those costs disappear.
Interesting also to note. High Flyer has at least 10,000 A100s at their disposal. Do we really think they didn’t use these on DeepSeek?
It's free and offline for as long as people want it, no matter what the company decides.
If they wish to, they can charge for future updates but all updates released (or changed to) open-source cannot ever go back, legally.
Hell, you can sell it yourself if you want to. That's open-source.
And of course it won't have me by the balls because I don't use AI.
