A Border Patrol official arrested a 19 yo citizen from Albuquerque in Arizona who didn’t have ID on him, claimed he ‘admitted’ to illegally crossing the border, abducted + ICE imprisoned him for 10 days, and would have deported him to Mexico if his family hadn’t tracked him down and provided his ID.

I cant tell you how many arrest reports I’ve read which said the suspect “confessed” and then when you get the actual statement, if there is one, it’s not even close to a confession. Most people understand that police are dishonest and shady, but they really have no idea what that means in practice.

It basically was at the point where if a cop wrote in his report that a suspect confessed, you assume it’s a lie, or at least significantly exaggerated, unless and until you see it on video, which may or may not exist. A pretty scary situation when so many cases are won on these “confessions”.

I’ve kept myself up several times just wondering how many innocent people we have locked up currently. Knowing how the police and courts work, I suspect it is a horrifically large percentage of the prison population?

Once had a cop ask me (crime victim) if I had a record. I said no and explained that, as part of a class-action settlement, my one arrest should have been expunged. He laughed and said “yeah it’s probably still there”

Come to think of it the 3 times I’ve been cuffed and detained it was because cops said I was someone I wasn’t. Another time carrying my cat to the emergency vet they said I was the ringleader of a “magazine scam”? And another they said I was an unhoused person known for causing trouble on the train?

so much of the evil is trapping people in a bureaucratic hell. make people go in person to sign documents (where ICE might arrest them). transfer them between facilities so no one knows where they are. make families and advocates exhaust themselves endlessly fighting a system designed to break them

even if it seems like it shouldn't be that hard to prove who you are and that you're innocent, the whole system is designed to make it miserable and traumatic to do so. then you might just take a plea deal
