i personally am in a decade-long problematic but intense relationship with my paperwhite, so if anyone finds out if it's possible to read bookshop dot org ebooks on devices other than their app....lmk

Exactly this - my eyes cannot take reading in a web browser on a computer screen. E-ink is the only way I can lose myself in the writing instead of fighting eye strain/pain
I think it's similar, and the new colour version looks really nice! the settings for warm/white light and the brightness are very customizable. I have it off for reading during the day and its completely neutral (like paper) and then as warm and dim as it will go at night
I have the new Kindle Paperwhite, and from what I understand the screen on the Kobo Libra 2 is nearly identical. Same PPI, same size, both have front-lights, both e-ink.
Swapped to a kobo; loving the dark mode and smartlight features, plus it dims with a gentle swipe and is so much more disabled friendly to hold than my old kindle. But the real draws were that it's repairable, and not supporting That Guy 🙌🏽 (unsure re bookshop ebooks though; they are US only so far)
Yeah I was excited about this bc yay ebooks supporting indies, but no, it seems like it’s still tied to the bookshop app which… ain’t great. Yet. But buying direct from the publisher or choose-your-mega-conglomerate (with several being better than the zon) and reading on a kobo is still an option!
I own a kindle and have never bought an ebook off Amazon for it. Exclusive use Libby and Hoopla from my public library to read and listen to audiobooks for free.
The Onyx Boox brand is android so you could read it from the app on an eink device. I'm not sure how they are with Android updates though so it may not have the longevity of a more traditional e-reader. https://Bookshop.org said they are working on kobo integration next though.
