As Sir Terry Pratchett said "the pen is mightier than the sword, but only if it's a very small sword and a very sharp pen!"
He'd a cynical but true insight on people "The intelligence of that creature known as a crowd is the square root of the number of people in it". Thats half the USA just now.
It's best not to travel to the United States anymore. If you want to visit an authoritarian regime or a completely corrupt kleptocracy, then go somewhere safer where tourism is still welcomed, like Colombia, El Salvador, Rwanda, and Vietnam!
Even white people who speak English get disappeared here!
My biggest issue is the description of the detainment conditions. The detainment, and Canada refusing entry, tells me that there is a visa issue that, in the past, might not have been issue, but now, both Canada and the U.S. are taking visas more seriously.
The US sucks. Don't come here. Honestly I couldn't think of a very good reason before the current problems. You'd only be missing an endless supply of strip malls littered with billboards and power lines.
Which I say as a question but really, it's just straight out of the nationalist authoritarian playbook. You want your country as isolated and xenophobic as possible. Outside thought coming in is dangerous and allies are weakness (unless they're also corrupt states who will never push back).
Hey now, we're a big beautiful country. Everyone deserves a chance to see the natural beauty of the world, even if nations do their damnedest to make it dangerous or inaccessible.
There was another German hiker, Annika Ananias, who was recently detained and deported as well. I just read about it on The Trek’s insta. We have a lot of international folks come here to hike the PCT, AT, and CDT but I would be avoiding the US for the next few years.
Sad but true, I guess. I find it crazy that border control can not only send you back, but also ban you from re-entering the USA for many years without any judge.
Literally insane to me they don’t just put you on a flight back to your own country if they’re that pressed. Ridiculous, punitive systems that overreact.
“HOW DARE YOU BE HERE!!” **keeps you detained indefinitely in the place they don’t want you to be**
These attention facilities are run by the same private businesses that run prisons and jails. They don't care who they're housing. They care that every day somebody is in their custody, they get paid. Has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with money
After watching John Oliver’s bit on immigration detention last night I was curious how they make money and seems it’s from government contracts, so it’s taxpayers that are paying to detain people indefinitely for no good reason.
Aye instead of using that money for the plane ticket to get rid of the person they allegedly don’t want on US soil. These systems need sued out of existence
OR better yet, [something, something, the storming of the bastille - redacted, redacted, redacted]
Now that's a true Brit: "she is vegan *** funds to her inmate account so she can buy basic necessities like tea and milk"

I, being European, deliberately did not visit the US during Trump 1. I did do so again while Biden was President, but now I have no plans to ever travel there again before this regime has toppled. Sad, but true.
They aren’t even saying their spies or “disruptors”. They haven’t done anything criminal and yet they are being treated like one. This government wants the world to fear us. What a nightmare.
A lot of us have Mediterranean ancestry so… I don’t really feel that safe. TBH, I rejected going to a infosec conference In Vegas due to safety concerns.
Good decision. Not only is it not safe for *anyone* going to especially Red/Conservative states right now, esp POC, you have the added bonus of not spending $ there.
Tell your governments to stop putting money into this place. Blue/lib state residents should stay there for now.
Travel to America obviously requires the proper visa, which, the father admits might be the real issue here, both for what happened in Canada and the U.S. What would be helpful is if, in cases like this, the U.S. could help the visitor get the proper visa, when it appears to be a mistake.

Soon those creature comforts will be totally inaccessible to most people as well, that'll be fun
Even when your paperwork is right there in front of them, and 100% correct, US Border Agency staff are rude, ignorant, impatient and unwelcoming.
No way I'd be going there now.
If the goal is to throw American into an isolation death spiral collapse they're certainly hitting all their marks.
Who would want to come travel in the USA with this kind of behavior occurring?
They shpuld also check us for Lighter fluid and matches in case we are visiting the Whitehouse 😉

These vultures benefit from tough on crime policies that keep more people behind bars for longer.

This is the third story in as many days on Bluesky of European and UK tourists being detained by ICE and imprisoned without just cause.
Against a backdrop of already declining tourism following the election.
The tourism industry contributes $2.36 trillion a year and supports 9.5 million jobs.

Won't be going back until sanity prevails. So that's never.
