Invent something cool -> patent something cool so that other people can use it if they pay you, making you money as a reward for inventing something cool
The problem is that they just... didn't use it any more after that
The problem is also that the patent meant that no one else could explore that idea without Monolith approving it. It's an example of capitalism hampering innovation by locking people out of participating in it. ONLY Monolith and those Monolith approved of were allowed to innovate on the system.
If I invent and sell something cool, something that a lot of people are buying, I deserve money from those sales of MY version of the product. And if I have competitors who are also allowed to innovate on my invention without my approval, that encourages ME to keep innovating on it.
