When we moved into our 1920 semi, the previous tenant had done a low-budget version of all this stuff. Everything either white, black, or mirrored/chrome. I think it was a sort of precursor to the 'greige' trend, which looks fairly benign in comparison.

When house hunting, my partner and I would occasionally see somewhere that someone had obviously spent a lot of money making to their particular tastes (e.g. black, grey, chrome, marble effect, shiny, hard), and our immediate thought would be how much money we'd have to spend undoing it all.

That's the thing. So much time, money, and mental energy wasted. I just hope they loved it while they lived here, before we bought it and undid their efforts. The same people extended the house on two sides, and fifteen years later, I'm still uncovering the corners they cut on actual building work.

Yeah, I can hardly blame someone for making the home they actually want to live in. I'd rather that than people keeping their homes neutral and devoid of personality, because that's more sellable. But it kind of makes me wish they'll find a buyer with similar tastes.

We saw another house that was at the other end of the spectrum: full of William Morris patterned wallpaper, a farmhouse-style kitchen, loads of wood and tiles, etc. In the photos it looked overwhelmingly busy, but in person it kind of worked.

Assuming Zoopla's data is actually any good and I'm interpreting it right, it looks like they bought it in 2006 – that's the most recent "sold" date. They took a crack at selling it in 2013, and seemingly changed their mind for a few years, before making more persistent efforts starting in June 2021
