I tried with a recent drawing to comment with the generator and it produced a comment with my drawing and the alt text. It was pretty close (just 1 or 2 small errors)
And yeah volunteers follow that feed & add in alt text, it’s really great.
In part, I'm often unsure about what, exactly, to include in the alt text, and how much might be "enough" or "too much."
Do you have hints to suggest, or maybe a link to guidelines?
I'm curious to learn more and willing to develop a habit of alt text.
A+ alt text would be as poetic as the image when seen, but I tend to focus on passing grade alt text.

I figured there would be some "official" guidelines somewhere but hadn't bothered to search until I got your clue to inspire an guide me.
But the best advice I have seen is describe it like you’re telling someone over the phone about it. What are the key points? What is the mood of the subject, etc?

That's the whole point of alt text. It's literally a text alternative to an image.
You would still want them to be able to engage with your site's content, so.
And it gets easier as it goes, once you get the hang of it.
