Came here to say "Alnwick". Beaten to it. Closest station is Alnmouth on the East Coast Mainline between Edinburgh and Newcastle. There appear to be buses between Alnmouth station and Alnwick.

Beautiful place. Alnwick Gardens, Castle etc., but then Barter Books, too!
