It’s still legitimately troubling to me how few people know just how often the accusations of witchcraft in the whole period of hysteria boiled down to things like this. Even wives being accused, because of the transfer of guilt related to “witchcraft” under her husband’s nose.

Persecuting ‘witches’ was an effective way to settle boundary disputes and to steal a women’s property or inheritance. The only devils involved walked on two legs and spouted biblical verses codifying laws of malicious intent.
