"A Real Pain" was, I thought, a little thin. The entire movie effectively boils down to one scene (the one in the train, for those who have seen it) and doesn't seem to have much else to say beyond that.

Agreed. I thought the train car and dinner scenes were it in terms of depth. I spent most of the movie feeling sorry for the other people on that tour and baffled how anyone came to like him by the end.
Ahhhhh. I felt so so different. One of my favorite movies of the year (although I still have a handful of the late ones left to see), and am so glad Eisenberg got a screenplay nomination.
