I was sold when a colleague in creative writing did a labor-based syllabus and had a student come in in tears because he had managed a high GPA by figuring out the "trick" of what each professor wanted and skating to the trick in each class. 2/

His CW syllabus was asking him to put in a substantial amount of work to get an A, and he was melting down about not having the time to do all the practicing at writing he needed to earn the grade that he wanted. 3/

"Straightforward and transparent but not easy" is I think the holy grail of ungrading techniques and I keep aiming to get there.

There is a fabulous quote along the same lines in @susandblum.bsky.social 's fantastic book. An easy to understand A, but an A which requires serious engagement.

Also HAH this thread is victim to a problem of the dissertation which is that autocorrect really likes "upgrading" instead of "ungrading"
