Yes, the so-called "American Dream" - that anyone can make it if they work hard enough, that America is a land of opportunity - has always been a lie. But just because it has never been real doesn't make it a bad dream. Isn't that still a dream that's worth fighting for?

We've become so gripped by our jaded cynicism from seeing this country ripped apart by actively evil Republicans and cowardly passive Democrats that we've just come to scoff at the eloquent ideals of our history. And we have to do better. We have to believe it can work - we have to MAKE it work.

It's not about standing up for a flag. It's not about singing a patriotic song. It's not about proclaiming "I love my country." I don't think any of us can muster that right now. This isn't about "America." It's about believing that those "inalienable rights" are GOOD things and worth fighting for.

I don't really know where I'm going with all of this. These are certainly evil times. But we HAVE to reject the hopelessness that is so pervasive right now. We have to believe that things can be better. If we are to be free, we have to believe that Good Old American Freedom™ has a chance.

I WANT America to be a land of freedom - freedom for people to love who they wish. Freedom for people of every race and background and origin - and EQUITY to ensure that freedom for all. Freedom from hunger. Freedom from poverty. Are those such bad things?
