Reminds me of the many voters in Ocasio-Cortez's Congressional district who voted for both her and Trump. She asked them why on social media, and many people said they felt like both she and Trump fought for regular people. Maybe something similar here?

it's least surprising for me since the AfD first gained ground by capturing a lot of Die Linke's old strongholds in the former DDR to begin with; and for nonvoters, i think it really sank in back in 2020 that a lot of them are insane cranks with bad, incoherent, contradictory opinions

My guess (from the armchair): low information voters voting based on vibes/identity and people who have been radicalized by a steady diet of increasingly normalized right-wing views about migration. But I also find this puzzling.
