Nationalism: A World History (Princeton UP) is now available in the US. It provides an overview of the rise of nationalism from the early modern era to the present. It deals with the political and cultural aspects of nationalism. and the impact of populism.... press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...

Also, he didn't say anything that wasn't true, didn't raise his voice and was polite, and this argument presumes that Trump and Vance weren't looking for a pretext to end the negotiations.

"More than 280 people — including journalists, academics and a prominent LGBT activist — were detained last week alone...The investigations and arrests coincide with a push from the president’s allies to change the constitution, which would enable him to run for a third term in 2028."

Imho he’s a narcissist, whose entire life is characterized by entitlement.

I think Trump-as-Putin-asset is not unfounded but clearly functions for many as a story to tell themselves that preserves American innocence. Trump does not need to be controlled by Putin to still benefit Putin because both are authoritarian illiberal nationalists

DoD terminates Minerva grants and State Dept eliminates Title VIII summer language institutes on the same day. Coming on the heels of COVID, there’s going to be gaping holes in international expertise in the US for a generation. /slow clap

Ocalan's statement is currently being read in Kurdish by veteran Kurdish politician Ahmet Turk.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

Friendly reminder to submit to this workshop if you are working at the intersection of feminist philosophy and migration studies! www.alws.at/iws_organiza.... Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you are interested and have any questions.

Turkey's "peace process" is built on the false dichotomy of "the good Kurds" vs "the bad Kurds".

Even though it was written in 1882, Ernest Renan's "What is a nation" is still very relevant and shall be required reading for any discussion on nations and nation-states.

Techbro liberterianism running rampant in the US has now taken hold of the WaPo it seems.

Cities in Germany where the AFD’s vote share is below 10% (In case you’re considering moving to Germany, it might be a good idea to refer to this list)

To summarize his take: Not every state is a nation-state, indeed many states are not nation-states, no matter how hard they push for "national homogeneity." Nation-state is a misconception that needs to be rethought and reconceptualized.

Walker Connor, criticizing the interutilization of nation and state and drawing attention to minorities in "nation-states", wrote in 1978: "Thus, 'mother Russia' invokes one type of response from a Russian and sth quite different from a Ukrainian."

Woke up to see Donald Trump sharing a video on Truth Social about turning Gaza into a holiday resort with a giant gold statue of Trump, ending with a final shot of Trump and Netanyahu enjoying the beach together. Absolutely unhinged. truthsocial.com/@realDonaldT...

Steuersatz Oberärztin: ca. 42 Prozent. Angestellter im Öffentlichen Dienst: ca. 39 Prozent. Krankenpfleger: Ca. 35 Prozent. (Nur ungefähr, da je nach Steuerklasse etc.) Steuersatz für einen Milliardär: im Schnitt 26 Prozent. Dass der Milliardär gleich besteuert werden soll, ist „radikal links“.

This!

War on Science update: DHS does surveys around the world. It's a key part of how we understand the world. Web of Science has 3501 items that mention DHS in the metadata; currently averaging about 350 per year. The last contract to run it was about $57 million per year. dhsprogram.com/Who-We-Are/N...

How surprising!!!

Aachen'imiz Almanya'nin batisinda CDU siyahlari icinde minicik yesil bir adacik.

How can someone voting for Die Linke or Die Grünen (or the SPD for that reason) switch to the AfD?! Who are these people? I am genuinely curious!

The backlash against Higher Education extends to the Netherlands. It seems to be affecting the countries with the most competitive university sectors the most

The comeback of the Left in Germany is sensational. Almost written off ahead of elections, they won 6 districts and almost 9% of votes + are biggest party in Berlin and among young voters. Also only party to not campaign on anti-immigration but to focus on affordable rent and cost of living

Latest results from German elections (as of this morning). BSW fails to pass the 5% threshold, making a CDU-SPD coalition more likely:

„[J]ust remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.“ Toni Morrison

BTW I'm not playing down how badly the SPD has done. This is the worst result the party has had in its 150 year history. Scholz was given a chance to revive the party in government and blew it But things could have been worse if you look at how the Greens held 2021 gains and Linke are surging

1 in 5 Germans voted far-right today, the best showing for the German far-right since the end of World War II. This result probably still keeps them out of the governing coalition, but they'll be the largest party in the opposition by far. Tough times ahead.

Preliminary thoughts on the German election results so far: 1) Chasing the far right vote by demagoguing on migration has brought the CDU/CSU it's second worst performance in history. It's in first place, but it's a weaker result than anything Merkel posted.

As it always does!

Very interesting to look at the age distribution in the exit poll. The SPD which already did very poorly with young voters last time continues to loose further there - a party of pensioners. Interestingly, also huge losses for the Greens among young voters and massive gains for the Linke.

For all the media hype about Sarah Wagenknecht, we will probably read little about the fact that Die Linke has profited massively from her leaving the party. As a clearly left-wing party, now without strong reactionary tendencies, it scored almost twice as much as the left-conservative BSW! #BTW25
