Even though it was written in 1882, Ernest Renan's "What is a nation" is still very relevant and shall be required reading for any discussion on nations and nation-states.

I actually wanted to share this quote by him but realized it won't make too much sense if I give no context. Still: "Bear the scorn of the powerful with patience. (...) The best way of being right in the future is, in certain periods, to know how to resign oneself to being out of fashion."
