What's people's feelings on Shikoku 1889 as an entry to the 18xx series of games? I'm a big fan of both trains and Japan and I've heard its really good. It is a fine game, but I wouldn't go past 5 players with 1889. For 6, look to 1830.

It's a very good (or might even be the best) entry game. It has the core concepts of 18xx but leaves out a lot of chrome which other titles add in.

As for production value and esthetics it's one of the best as well.

I plan on it being my first, but I wanted to ease people into the concepts with Irish Gauge and Iberian Gauge first.

If you have them, I'd suggest Wabash Cannonball, West Riding & South African Railways as all leaning (more) on the predictive evaluation and direct management of opponent positions and incentives that are so central to the #18xx.

Cool I actually belive my local store that I have some credit with has this in stock along with the other games in this series. What are you thoughts on Irish Gauge, Ride the Rails, ect line of games?

IG works, but is a weaker game compared to eg Wabash Cannonball or Preußische Ostbahn, etc: not terrible, not great. Those two in particular are beyond top shelf. While WR & SAR are also great, I recommended them more for what they demand of their players.

I've no experience with Ride the Rails.
