The initial eruption was massive. I was up late watching the stream. We weren't expecting anything more than an intrusion that didn't reach the surface. Boy were we surprised when the screen lit up and there was lava.
The USGS YouTube is one of my favorite cozy science channels. They post short seismic updates every month from Yellowstone along with some geology facts. ❤️
Looks like it took maybe 30 minutes from the first light of eruption to the entire floor being covered. Can't tell how much rise in the floor there was, though.
That's about how long it took. I was watching it live on the USGS stream. j
Won't be able to tell how much was added until tomorrow as there was some backflowing into the void after the eruption paused. You could see the 'bathtub line' of where it receded from.
It's a timelapse of several hours, but yes, there was a large amount of lava erupted in a very short period of time. The eruption lasted around 14 hours. It has since paused. thankfully it was contained in the crater inside the caldera.
I'm Australian; we're not used to lava; and seeing it on a time lapse made it especially scary. It looked like the tide coming in, except lethal. It was scary in an interesting way, though, I enjoyed watching it!
It wasn't all that different when I was watching the stream this morning. Chillin' with the Two Pineapples crew, mild latenight banter as usual, and then it was orange on the screen. We all were in shock and forgot what to do when there's a caldera eruption.

It was an interesting day.
The floor was, in this case, lava.
