🧶 craftiverse, especially dyers, advice???

I have a fabric that bleeds. A lot. How many times do you think I need to wash, or should I say like “if this is still bleeding purple after the fifth wash, I need to give up and find something else.”?

Yes, and a lot of private sector R&D is just within firms & not shared publicly, because they have an incentive to develop internal tacit knowledge & trade secrets for competitive advantage. The U.S. also makes private R&D tax deductible for businesses, so there’s incentives to count a lot of R&D.

i don't have money for a regular home, axios

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

Cutting research at the National Science Foundation by more than half(!) is intentionally sabotaging the future. These are contracts the federal government competitively awards to universities to develop breakthroughs and train graduate students to become future leaders & experts. Future is at risk.

Apart from the fact that it's morally indefensible, colleges' efforts to punish students for speaking about this topic seem obviously self-defeating. What college student is going to develop a more positive view of Israel's actions as a result of these speech crackdowns? Universities know this.

Signed, in the hope it makes any difference #NASA #planetaryscience www.planetary.org/save-nasa-sc...

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....

The private sector will not fill the gaps. The size of the cuts is too big, and the incentives does not align to do basic research or train the next generation of PhD students. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/are-univer...

Shame on MIT. University administrations are craven and cowardly.

In light of this deeply illegal activity at NSF and the ongoing attack on American science, I'm posting the slides from my 2017 talk at the American Physical Society about the Nazi take over of German physics/why German is no longer science's lingua franca 🧪 🧵 1/26 drive.google.com/file/d/1_MCm...

"let copilot help you draft" "can gemini write that for you" I have now taken the only reasonable course of action in the circumstances

Breaking news: Contradicting HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the CDC continues to recommend the coronavirus vaccines for healthy children, according to new documentation posted to the agency's website.

If you see reactionary centrist takes that universities did this to themselves by being too woke, or not being friendly enough to conservatives, remember there are always people willing to make the arguments of the authoritarian respectable

when I was in Estonia in 2004 or so taxi drivers, upon learning I was English, would immediately ask if I wanted to go to a strip club because Tallinn had been overrun by British stag nights

“As the Trump administration moves with abandon to deny visas, expel foreign students and slash spending on research… the global supremacy that the United States has long enjoyed in health, biology, the physical sciences and other fields, they warn, may be coming to an end.”

Stop worrying about being an "ugly American" when you go abroad, it's the English the locals dread coming to town.

drunken lout lads out on chaos-filled stag dos are actually one of the UK’s chief international exports

Heads up! I’ll be posting eleven First-run, scale model Mount Erebus tissue box covers tomorrow morning in my Etsy shop. It’s the southernmost active volcano on Earth! There will also be a few other volcanoes in the mix too! phaneritic.etsy.com

Department of Homeland Security officers invading a congressman's offices and arresting a staffer who tried to stop them is very, very bad. gothamist.com/news/homelan...

"Steampunk stripping" has me laid OUT

If you don’t know about Kenji Lopez-Alt’s hack for phenomenal oven roasted potatoes, you SHOULD. I thought I already made those deliciously but holy crap. Made these and eggs and fried chorizo with caramelized onions and youngest kid & husb & I ate every scrap. 😍 www.seriouseats.com/the-best-roa...

We were told two days ago by NSF about the upcoming CAREER competition; this proposed budget zeroes it out completely. And ADVANCE. And REUs. And RETs. HBCU-* and S-STEM maintain most or all of their funding; TCUP loses over half.

ATTN: Geologists, volcanologists, and science nerds (compliment) with allergies...fantastic tissue box covers available ! Made by a man who I know keeps topo maps in his glove compartment at all times!

In case people are amazed/confuses/shocked/whatever by the devastating cuts proposed for US science, technology, and innovation, please remember that autocrats always go after three main targets: 1️⃣ Media 2️⃣ Courts 3️⃣ Academics It’s literally textbook and, yes, it’s happening in the US.

this is a nightmare. Telescopes aside, funding woes are so bad that people like me trying to get into phds are facing great difficulty even breaching the acceptance threshold — it’s been exhausting as someone who first applied in 2020!

This is not just a NASA thing, and not just an NSF thing, this is an all-of-science thing (also involving our siblings in the humanities). The president's budget shutters everything that _actually_ makes America great. Please call your Congressfolk and ask them to reject these travesties.

So, Paul's whole thread on Trump's NASA budget request is super helpful. But this one really jumped out at me. Here's why: currently, NASA and the European Space Agency have five Mars orbiters that act as relays--they do their own thing, but they also send data back from rovers on the surface.

Might be time to repost this oldie of mine from the bad site (originally written in response to arnoldzwicky.org/2017/05/17/l... )

man I am not a perfect parent but I can be pretty god damn sure that if my kids decide not to talk to me as an adult it’s not going to be because I abused them what the fuck is wrong with this person and why would they publish it in a newspaper more importantly, why would the newspaper publish it

As NYWFP works to consolidate support around its slate of candidates, we're proud to rank @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social #1 🥳 To give voters clear guidance, we're ranking a full slate of 5 candidates. When we unite, we can defeat Cuomo & elect a mayor who fights for us. Let's get this done!

We are stardust with anxiety. 😅

I don't think I can convey how dire this is. Has Trump really considered the impact of making thousands of top scientists, virologists, and molecular biologists suddenly unfundable? Has he not read a Spider-Man comic?
