There used to be 2 in my neighborhood. I rarely found anything I wanted to read in them but I loved visiting them. One disappeared when everything was shut down for COVID and the other a year or so before that. (I think at least one of the families moved.)
A minimum 30 years to the one I saw in between a location of Howe corner and Faith SD on Hwy 73
Out in the middle of somewhere
Wondered what it was
Like a giant mail box on a post and clear view
Never stopped
Just there
Figure that idea picked up somewhere and brought to that location
Does your library have a used book store? I'm a temp at ours and a lady came in & bought $22.00 worth of children's books that were 1/2 off! And they start at 25c.
I never donate my used books or sell them anymore, they all go to little free libraries. Love them. The only reason I don't have one is that the road i live on is very busy no sidewalk a a deep ditch making it hard to put one in. So I am happy to share with others
I absolutely love seeing folks out walking their dogs and doubling back to check out my little library! It's been such a fantastic way to talk with more neighbors
Is that like when there is a bookcase in front of a house?
There are a few houses around here like that. I don't stop because I always be afraid the people think I'm stealing. Plus I have no idea what the rules are for this.
Most of the folks I've asked who have boxes say they are thrilled if people just take a book. They don't expect it back, and love it if you swap one out, but you don't have to. It's great for our vacation destination town, because the tourists can take beach reading! :)
I don't do immediate swaps at a given book box. For every 3 or 4 visits where I take a book, I then come back on the next visit and unload a bunch of good books.
Book Boxes are one of the hidden gems of American Neighborhood Culture.
You can’t steal what is freely given. Just return the favor with a dilation when you can or pass the kindness on in wherever a need shows up in your life that you can help with.
Ok @bsky we either need an edit button or a delete button.

I always stop by the one in my neighborhood. I look at the books, just in case the people who sponsor it can see that someone cares. I hardly ever take books, but I do drop books off if it’s runs low. It’s such a great thing to have in the neighborhood. Thank you for yours!
I'm glad it is working out for you! I used to have one until people started leaving bags of clothes and other crap at the base of it like it was some type of Goodwill. Finally took it down.
I installed one years ago and half expected it to be immediately vandalized. Instead, the community has done nothing but support it. I almost never need to add books myself.
Let me ask which camp you are in- the one that says the word Library means we borrow and bring that book back to that box, or the one that says take it and distribute it as you will, perhaps leaving one of my own in its place? (I actually ask the person with the boxes which they prefer! :)
A good place to start is https://LittleFreeLibrary.org that’s where I purchased mine. They are easy to build, or have one made maybe. But these people started them.
