They’ll tell you that foreigners act differently towards fire (they’re more responsible people, carelessness is punished legally and socially, etc.)

Yeah I primarily got interested from living in Russia. Looked at lots of single stair buildings in grad school but the difference was just taken for granted. Mentioning it in practice, people acted like it was straight up insane. I never thought it could change, especially not from
Twitter.

This would actually be an interesting question for the "ICC" membership: what percent of it...
Q1: knows a foreign language?
Q2: has traveled internationally, and if so, how often?
Q3: has done any research into the codes in other countries?
I'd guess that the % would be quite low especially for Q3.

Alon Levy, in his Pedestrian Observations blog, says the same thing about American transit officials. The MTA in New York, for example, refuses to learn from metros in Europe or Asia.

does single stair even require foreign language skills or interest in other countries? in general i agree but for that specifically i don't think it does- which makes opposition to it even more odd

elevators really do seem to be a US-wide thing, right? any outlier jurisdictions there?

It doesn't directly require someone to have foreign language skills or interest in other countries, but if someone have those, they're probably less likely to have not-invented-here syndrome.

i've brought back so many and only 1 sort of took off. there's either no demand for what i want to do, or it's bowhere close to being legal or feasible.

The US is so isolated from the cultural exchange of ideas that you were fortunate to embark on because relatively few people are able to work in a foreign country and then continue their career in the US. More than just traveling, I love the idea of encouraging broader experience for young designers
