I dont remember off the top of my head where it is, but Steam does give you the option to remove a game from your library without processing a refund. The equilivant of throwing it in the trash.
There's an entire website (forgot the name of it) that has a HUGE community of amateur VAs that are happy to work for low prices or even free to help build a portfolio as well. Fuckin' use that instead of AI!
Honestly I'm a pro VA and I'D love a chance to be a part of something like that. Shame they wanted to shortcut so much they compromised the product in the end.
If the TTS isn't trained on stolen data and isn't replacing human creativity I don't think that's the same thing at all. "AI" and TTS have existed for decades before the recent generative AI stuff.
Looking it up. It’s really opaque and hard to tell what the credits go to, but it seems TikTok really does pay voice actors for their work. Not my sole ethical concern, but it is complicated.
Fair enough! I just worry a lot of people are lumping all "AI" together as evil when a lot of it isn't. Especially as a game developer who has built AI but not *that* kind of AI, I worry some people won't know the difference
Text to talk is not Generative AI, it’s actually not even AI at all or any kind. They are totally different technologies. Whether or not the actors are paid is separate issue.
It's genuinely gross that they did this and Steam isn't much better by burying this disclaimer so far down the fucking page. It should be a disclaimer right above the button that let's you add the game to your cart. Hiding it at the bottom is fucking slimy.

Terrible.
I'd kill to get some roles under my belt.
2: Makes me realize I shouldn't be making TikToks using their built in AI TTS when I feel this strongly.
