Musk infamously repeats the “humanity must be come a multi planet species” line, and it’s often that statement that brings futurists into his orbit. The sentence itself is true, ish. It would be more accurate to say “humanity must not remain a single planet species.”

The difference lies in ΔV.

The hard thing about becoming a space inhabiting species is that gravity wells suck. It takes so much effort to get out of them.

Conversely, once you’re out of them, it’s super easy to stay out of them. So, the absolute last thing you want to do, if you can at all avoid it, is go back down one.

Terraforming makes for great movies and stories, but is mind-meltingly stupid to do in real life, even if you had the tech to do it “perfectly.” Cus all you’ve done is mess with some rock and go back down a gravity well, and now you’re back to square one: at the bottom of the fucking well.
