Y'know, much as we want Scholastic to not have separate book fairs- what's to stop parents' groups from kicking Scholastic out of the schools entirely and replacing it with something from the far right?

Nothing. But preemptively capitulating to them cedes the fight before it's even happened. Scholastic is a billion dollar company. They can offer meaningful resources in this time but instead they're doing this.

We need to do all the things. State legislatures are important, but Scholastic makes way too much money off of teachers and librarians who are themselves in the line of fire now from these right-wing goons to cede this fight.

Additionally, schools can ALREADY choose not to display certain books. They have always had this right. This decision sees Scholastic siloing out books preemptively, ones that may not even be on these parents and legislators' radars. And it makes it seem easier to censor than to not.

If parents' groups and school boards care enough to kick Scholastic Book Fairs out and replace them with something else, they were going to do so anyway. This is going to affect schools who maybe have one loudmouth and who have an overworked librarian who decides "maybe I don't need this hassle."
