The truth hurts, and the truth that some people turn out to be not only a disappointment, but juxtaposed to what we think they are, can be so disorientating and upsetting. That said, knowing what they are is important so no more energy is wasted on them. Take care.

Having next neighbors who have joined us for bbqs, lit fireworks on New Years Eve, always saying Good Morning, and swapping birthday gifts ended when we knew they voted for Trump. They don't share our morals and values. They don't care about people who are different than them.

Describes the last decade+ for me. Masks have been slipping in the US for a while. Exposing a feast for the leopards. I see it as a service. They see love as a finite resource and I am free to lavish more on others.

With great regret, I have come to the same conclusion in a few cases.

They seem to have always been primarily concerned with their own advancement and never to have burdened with anything approaching principles.

It is profoundly depressing, yet illuminating.

Same in the U.S. As soon as anything like something that smelled of tolerance, never mind parity, reared its head, white folks made their choices very clear. Hell no. Someone asked me how can America be racist when it elected a Black president twice, and I just started laughing.

I have encountered two types the first are the intellectuals. The ones who are so giddy at this current devastation because it proves that they are right about too much power in govt, and or it is achieving their aims of shrinking the govt. The other type is full on mask off, no more pretend.

It's so sad. I think back to the London Olympics and it really felt like a better place, with more inclusivity, more acceptance etc. Then UKIP, the Brexit debacle, and more and more right wing grifters have poisoned everything. It's sickening.

These people who know you probably don't feel like that about you personally... But when people start feeling comfortable in this new (unfortunate) norm, it becomes more obvious that you are probably their acceptable exception, not like "the rest". Or worse, the friend who can't make them racist 😐🤦🏾‍♀️

Very well said, the reactionary/fascist surge we're seeing wouldn't be so dangerous if tons of "normal" people didn't at least latently hold prior/pre-existing hatred (even if they refrained from expressing it) in them that they feel they can now embrace express openly
