I think this is mostly about claiming primacy to set the agenda within the party. The electoral advantage is secondary and a pretext.

i'm not naive, i suppose i understand the short-term theory, and that a lot of these folks are also expressing their genuine if loathsome values, but man, think for a second about the long term cost and the impression you're creating in the mind of voters
