i suppose in the long run all taxes are simply charging for the services- infrastructure, rule of law, national defense, and so on- that the state provides

But it’s not comparable. I cannot opt out of the services of the US military by not paying income tax, or opt out of social security or Medicare coverage by not paying FICA. And in the former case, what I pay has no connection to how much I benefit. I can opt out of tolls by not driving on a road!

And unlike sales tax, where this argument is fallaciously used, the road actually belongs to the public and the charge has an obvious connection with the services provided!
