The thing about scientific research is that it’s one of the few national investments that’s a clear public good even if you entirely discount the actual ostensible point of it.

Leon has some inkling, but it makes him intensely jealous that there are real scientists and engineers who are a lot more qualified and accomplished than he'll ever be -- many of them women.

I did a search, and found several uni sites, that mention them, but the actual language was not available that I could find and read.
Much better to scrap all that and replace it with speculating on imaginary assets. That's a great way to run the economy.
