The Combahee River Raid happened on June 2, 1863. Harriet Tubman commanded 150 Black soldiers (many who were formerly enslaved) in the only known military operation led by a woman during the Civil War. Almost 800 formerly enslaved people were rescued during the raid, some joined the Union Army.
