Just a reminder that you shouldn't use FaceID to lock/unlock your phone. Cops can force your phone open using your face. Always have a passcode. Cops cannot force you to enter a passcode to unlock your phone. This is just a pro tip, not legal advice.

I recall some stories about CBP not needing a warrant to require you to unlock your phone, even for citizens, when crossing the border.

You can refuse, but iirc they can then detain you or refuse you entry. Even for citizens. Wanna say this was during Obama admin too

Citizens can’t be refused entry. They may confiscate your phone and give you hell for a while, but you have the right to come in.

ios and android both have 'lockdown' modes now which will force a pin to be entered to unlock but you have to remember to actually turn that on before encountering them

It’s still a password, so I don’t think they can force you to enter it.

What I do know about it (though this info might be outdated, needs checking) is that it’s easier to break into a phone with forensics softwares with the patterns.

CBP can confiscate your device and send it to be unlocked. If you are not a citizen or permanent resident, they can detain you while they wait for your device to get unlocked. (And I am scared they will do that to permanent residents too, frankly.)

"Border" is not just physical borders, but also includes ports which handle international traffic. So if you live within 100 miles of an "international" airport or sea/river port, you can be subject to ICE searches.

You can also log out of social media and uninstall the apps. Have a couple of boring "clean" accounts, like LinkedIn and a work email account. Clear your text messages. Only keep photos of pets, nature, etc.

Then if they look at your phone, there's nothing special to see.

If you can afford to travel, you can choose to travel without devices, to reformat your devices or upgrade your device there. It's a safety issue, like staying in places with fire exits. (Don't travel to US. It isn't safe.)

I have to travel for work, which my employer pays for. I certainly could not afford to do so on my own. Having to get a burner phone each time would be prohibitively expensive.

Since I work in the medical industry and deal with PHI, I'm legally required to keep my phone encrypted, and not permit any outside access without a proper warrant verified by my employer's legal team.

I would not take those devices with me. I’ll take a burner. I can always log in to cloud accounts *after* I’m at my destination and then log out and wipe the device if I want to take it back with me.

Enjoy the convenience of FaceID but need to turn it off discretely?

Press and hold the power button and either of the volume buttons for about two seconds… the device is… hard-locked and will require the passcode to unlock.
