The Trump storm is coming. And suddenly it’s very, very important that we’ve elected people who believe in democracy, freedom, and the plight of working people at the state level. 🧵

What we need are Democrats who have had it with being polite gentlemen and women; Democrats who know how to raise their voice in anger; Democrats who see this as a fight to the death and not a political skirmish.
As long as Democrats, especially leadership, are taking in big money from th donors and corps., there will be no actual effort to be an opposition party. They will continue to play pretend and then act shocked and confused when they keep losing.
It’s important that messaging reflect the mood of Dem voters. No obedience in advance! We expect an opposition party! Let’s not sleepwalk to autocracy thinking the rules still apply to everyone equally. They don’t! No more asymmetrical engagement. Read the room please and thank you!
Unfortunately I live in Oklahoma a. Our Governor and statesmen have been drooling over trump since before he was elected. There will be no democracy in Oklahoma.
Wisconsinite and blue voter here. I'm concerned. Where are the National Dems? There are already Trump's broken campaign promises and cabinet picks. I haven't heard much push back from Dems calling him out. Maybe I've missed it. Someone needs to be there everyday pointing out his failures loudly.
Good question. I'm calling my Dem senators and rep pretty much every day to urge them to confirm Biden's judges and demand background checks of DJT's nominees, and to stand strong! I think they need to hear from us. Tell everyone to get noisy!
And enlist friends to do the same. One thing we can do is make noise. Another is to focus on state/local issues and elections. Hard, sustained work at these levels will turn things around. Look at Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin. Georgia elected two Dem senators. But the Rs there are purging voters.
I don’t understand this — not being snarky here: I’ve been a staffer, so I’m not inclined to pester the incredibly hardworking staff of my fantastic, all-blue reps at any level. They’re already doing all they can, and they know their constituents have their backs—we just elected them again!
It’s not pestering! We are their constituents and it’s their job to hear about our concerns. Our elected officials work for
Us. Also, many Dems voted for HR 9454 - the bill that gives Treasury to label any nonprofit as terrorist organization so no, they are not doing all they can.
Sure; esp if there’s an issue that you think your electeds are wavering on, or need your voice counted, then contacts help. But I assure you in this case, repeated calls to stalwart blue reps basically keep the interns busy. I’d rather have the interns working on outreach, new voters for 2026, etc.
Interns in their govt offices can't to do political stuff. I call only occasionally but send emails via Resistbot. Small numbers of calls don't do a lot, but hundreds/thousands have some impact, in both Dems and Rs.
That said, I'm likely to spend way more of my time next year on state/local work.
Ben I think you are definitely the person for the job of DNC chair. From Pod save to Politics war room I've listed to you and how successful you've been in Wis. We need smart people in this fight and for Econ stuff we need this woman involved https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTYxb8Pb9/
It is very important to have elected leaders who believe in democracy, freedom, and the plight of the working class, and also know when to throw out the rule book when the ruling class raids the government at the expense of the entitlements that are the right of everyone in this country! #EatTheRich
Kansas has a Dem governor (yay!) but this last election gave Republicans a super majority. Makes me embarrassed to live here. Plus we have horrible senators and an evil AG. Wish us luck!!!!
Okay—let’s step back. We’ve seen how states with Republican trifectas responded to the last few years: abortion bans, attacks on workers rights and personal freedom and just about everyone without Trump-sized bank accounts. With Trump in office, they’ll go even further.
The previous time Wisconsin elected a Democratic governor at the same time a Dem held the White House was in 1962.
This is a well-established pattern in political sciences that plays out like clockwork in WI: the party in the White House loses ground in the midterms.
Naturally, when Democratic President Joe Biden took office, our state was headed for a Republican Governor. Tim Michels was probably measuring the drapes.
Democrats MUST point out that the REAL 'deep state' is the billionaire robber barons who want to rob us and cut, gut, and monetize our govt to work for them instead of us. They own & control everything in America -- and now, our gov't too!

And @housedemocrats.bsky.social @senatedemocrats.bsky.social - stop bowing to GOP and broligarchy. It's your job to fight WITH and FOR US!. STAND UP & FIGHT!
The Democratic Party FAILED in November. Independents outnumber Democrats in blue wall states. That's the big picture that anyone who wants to beat MAGA must understand. I'm DONE with the party as it now stands and functions. A whole new "party" that can WIN needs to be assembled from scratch.
The scale and breadth of the problem cannot be overcome with “better messages”. Sorry, I wish it was that simple. This is a multivariate equation; voter suppression, years of feeding local elections, judgeships, campaign finance reform, and bet-hedging all play a role.
Agree with this. And also voters were just angry and wanting to punish the status quo. Some things cannot be messaged out. The guy on a dairy farm who says all their workers are undocumented and hopes deportations don’t happen even tho he voted for mass deportation. How do you message this guy??
The Dems primary messaging for the last 9 years has been pretty much nothing other than "but, Trump!!" It's clearly not working. But, I don't have much faith that they care enough to figure it out. They are all still getting rich.
Huh. I guess I heard different points along the way. Ao many factors go into messaging (both putting out and receiving), but I’m first to say I’m not an average voter (whatever that is) and haven’t seen research. My point, really, is that we need to work on a lot of targets to swing back.

They seem a little stuck.

Go into this fight realizing you have to “make” things common again!
These organizations don’t fight fair!
ESPECIALLY DNC hires who work on budget, and as finance chairs.
Doesn't appear that people like Lindy Li were actually on our side. At all.
Elected leaders need to be stronger, louder and more effective at communicating with repub constituents.
Education. Empathy. Dems need to battle on! Use your words effectively!
For instance -
Ken Paxton is suing a New York abortion bill provider
Alkegen is HQ'd in Texas, but has a major office in Buffalo
Many calls were made including one to Paxton's Office about the company possibly calling them soon. Enough with being nice.

And here’s the thing: we very easily could’ve had a red wipeout in key states in 2022.
This was supposed to happen in Wisconsin.

Dem. President Lyndon Johnson? GOP Governor Warren Knowles.
Dem. President Jimmy Carter? GOP Governor Lee Dreyfus.
Dem. President Bill Clinton? GOP Governor Tommy Thompson.
Dem. President Barack Obama? GOP Governor Scott Walker.
But Wisconsin voters broke the mold.
