Personally not a fan of slabbed photos. I do understand the reasoning but it’s not for me. I don’t see the photo market growing to a point it will be used a lot, and the increased asking cost of most graded photos keeps me from owning one

I like that the label provides useful identifying information (if correct) and that the slab protects the photo. This is the reverse of my position with cards where 99.9% of the time the card is easily identified without its label and touching is part of the fun.

But does the slab protect the photograph as much as we think? It does keep it from being knocked around, possible rips, and away from greasy fingers. However, there is the other side that few consider, which is the off-gassing from the plastic slab slowly eroding the photo. It is all a trade-off.

What makes a photo “type 1” and what about press photos? Could you/should you grade them?

Type 1 is classified by PSA as being printed within two years of the photograph being taken. How a grader can 100% determine when the photograph was printed is a little suspect. You can grade press photos. Should you grade them? That is up to the collector.

This is something I probably think about way too much. Today many if not most of the Hobby's most valuable cards are slabbed. How do we know in 50 years that cards won't somehow stick to the slab material?
